Greenway dredging project to start in late December

Work is expected to start on dredging the Greenbelt Lake in late December, a project the City of Maryville has been anticipating for 10 years. Contractor on the $1.9 million project will be Environmental Safety and Health Inc. (ES&H), of Knoxville. The Army Corps of Engineers will be overseeing the project. The city’s share of the project will be $600,000, but city officials anticipate that the corps will take off $200,000 for in-kind work and use of its property, according to Maryville Director of Public Works and Engineering Angie Luckie. Corps engineers will bring in an office trailer and equipment during the third and fourth week of December. They plan to start drawing the water down slowly Dec. 20 to Jan. 6. The lake will be dry through completion of the project in August. Luckie said the plans call for building a diversionary structure to pump the water around the project in the middle of February. There are also plans to protect and relocate the fish and wildlife in mid-February, she added. Then they will start excavation up to mid-June. Also in mid-June they will build a weir structure, which will collect the silt until city workers can empty it to keep the lake from refilling so fast again. In early March through mid-July, plans call for landscaping and wetland seeding. They will be regenerating the banks, which will include installing boulders, she said. The dredging project is to be complete by Aug. 23. Work will include moving an estimated 38,000 cubic yards of silt to the Blount County Public Landfill, Luckie said. A great deal of rainy weather would affect the schedule, she added. The dredging is expected to be complete before the Foothills Fall Festival in October.
